Meet with US | Amori Cross-Faulks: My experience at WKU
I first applied to study at Wenzhou-Kean University after I was convinced by my friend, Zinnyah that it would be a great opportunity. We recently traveled to WKU in the summer of 2025, with a travel-learn group from Kean’s main campus in Union, New Jersey.
At first, I was very skeptical because it was my last semester of college. I wouldn’t be able to graduate with the friends I had made during my undergraduate years. Or celebrate with my loved ones the day of. I also wasn’t sure if I was ready for such a big change in my daily life. But everything changed when my parents pushed me to go.
Although I’d always wanted to study abroad, I thought that I had missed my chance and it was too late in my academic career to pursue this dream. I am so glad that I did not keep this mentality. Attending WKU this semester has completely changed my outlook on life and academics. Studying, learning, and travelling in China has opened a world of opportunities for me that I didn’t know were available to me.

Since moving to China for the semester, I have travelled to Shanghai, Hangzhou, Beijing, Ningbo and so many more cities. I’ve met so many friends from different parts of the country and the world. While growing my knowledge of Chinese culture, and language. Every day here is exciting and different compared to my previous college experience. The constant support from the friends I’ve made here keeps me motivated and engaged in classwork, daily life and my goals.
Living in China has helped to grow my language and interpersonal skills. Although I only know very basic words and phrases, I am not afraid to approach people and ask for help or guidance. China has a very welcoming energy that encourages me to seek new information and constantly challenges my previous mindset.
I have completed interviews for media outlets like CCTV, where I got the chance to share some of my Chinese language skills. I also had the opportunity to teach English to elementary school students at Wenzhou Shifulu Primary. Where I got to learn from the students and teach a class for the first time.

The effortless beauty within China’s scenery and landscapes continues to amaze me. From the historical architecture in Beijing to Ningbo’s Dongqian Lake. Wherever I go, I am astounded by the extensiveness of the cultural history and stunning views the country has to offer.

My Chinese class with Ms. Jiang is one of my favorite parts about living in China. She makes studying the language and culture fun while helping us to experience different parts of Chinese culture. Thanks to her, my classmates and I were able to experience the Yue Opera, making traditional tea in a teahouse and attending a Lion Dance practice. During our daily classes, she is extremely patient and supportive of us. I am truly thankful for her guidance and lessons during this semester.

Being that this will be my final semester in college, I was nervous to graduate from WKU. In fear that I wouldn’t know any of my fellow graduates and wouldn’t be familiar with the staff. This fear quickly faded during graduation photos earlier this week, where I was accompanied by friends I’d made during my semester. I felt relieved and grateful to everyone who accompanied me on this journey.

From travelling the country, trying new foods, and spending way too much money on Taobao. This semester has been unforgettable. In the future, I hope to come back to China to relive the amazing experiences I have had here.
