CMG Zhejiang: “Chinamaxxing” Goes Offline as Young People Embark on Their Studies in China
“Chinamaxxing”, a viral new term, has recently taken global social media by storm. Cityscapes, daily life and technological advances seen online are bringing a new generation closer to China. For many, their curiosity extends beyond the screen.
This fall, more than 70 international students from the United States, Italy, France, Russia, Kazakhstan and beyond arrived at Wenzhou-Kean University—not just to study, but to experience China firsthand.
“Many people share what China is like, how beautiful it is, and how friendly its people are.” For international students, short-form videos on social media are important windows into China, giving them a glimpse of its cities, everyday life and culture. What they encounter online sparks their curiosity and, for many, inspires them to turn “seeing China online” into “seeing China in person.”
The high-quality education in China is another major draw for international students. For Aisha Kabdullina from Kazakhstan, studying in China is an opportunity not only to share her own culture with others, but also to immerse herself in Chinese culture and gain a deeper understanding of it.
China’s technological advances are no longer something they just hear about. From “Made in China” products to artificial intelligence, technology is increasingly finding its way into their studies and daily lives. These everyday encounters give them a closer look at China’s technological progress. Anna Ostroverkhova from Russia noted that Chinese smartphone brands are highly popular in her home country. Chinese car brands have also gained growing attention in recent years.
By experiencing China firsthand—in the classroom, on campus and throughout the city—international students are gaining a deeper understanding of the country beyond what they see online. For these young people, studying in China is more than an international academic experience. Through everyday experiences, they are discovering the many facets of an authentic China.
