August 12, 2017 | University News | Chenyan Zhou

On August 12, 2017, almost 600 freshmen from the mainland China and 7 international students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and foreign countries arrived and began their new life at Wenzhou-Kean University (WKU).

Zhejiang, Anhui, Hubei, Henan, Hebei, Shandong, Sichuan, Chongqing, Liaoning, Guizhou, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia … we are from all over the world, but now we have one common name “WKUer”.

A girl from Liaoning whose total score in College Entrance Examination is 75 points above the admission line of national key universities, joined Wenzhou-Kean University after learning about it from a senior student.

After 3 hours’ flight, Yu Ziqi, a candidate from Dalian in Liaoning, arrived in Wenzhou after travelling thousand miles. This year, the qualification line in science of our school in Liaoning Province is 50 points above the first-tier provincial admission line. The score of Yu Ziqi in College Entrance Examination is higher than the first-tier provincial admission line by 75 points.

Yu Ziqi knows a senior student of WKU, whose parent is colleague of her parent, and often hears her talking about WKU’s American education system and English-only teaching method which is quite impressive to Yu Ziqi. Before filling applications for college, Yu Ziqi especially turned to her for advice. “She told me that WKU has very strong atmosphere of learning. I don’t want to spend my college time in vain. I hope that I can make good use of the time in WKU to study English and the specialty so that I can go abroad to study after graduation.” And in the opinion of Yu Ziqi’s father, American education put emphasis on fostering students’ critical thinking and self-learning ability. So all the families support her choice.

This year, WKu planned to enroll 574 students from ten provinces and cities all over the country. But due to high-quality education resources, it enrolled 594 students eventually. The admission line of the first batch students enrolled in the national unified university entrance exam reached a record high nationwide (except for Zhejiang and Shandong Province). The admission line of liberal art students exceeds the first-tier provincial admission line of their own provinces by 21.1 on average, up 39.46% compared to last year; the admission line of science students exceeds the first-tier provincial admission line of their own provinces by 35.45 on average, up 4.39% compared to last year.

Except for Liaoning Province, the admission lines for liberal arts and science in Hebei Province are higher than the admission line of national key universities in the Province by 33 and 44 respectively; since there is only one provincial admission line for both the first and second tier in Shandong Province, the admission lines for liberal arts and science exceeds the provincial admission line by 72.92 and 139.78 on average respectively. The admission lines for liberal arts and science in other provinces also increase by different percentages compared to last year.

“Three in one” examination system helps to realize “WKU” dream since Grade Two in high school

Aside from unified national university entrance exam, “Three in one” examination system is the other path for Wenzhou applicants to go to WKU. This year, a total of 35 applicants were admitted to WKU. Chen Shanjie from Cangnan of Wenzhou was one of them.

Although a freshman, Chen Shanjie is very familiar with WKU. “I have been to WKU for at least 5 times through Campus Tour.” Since Grade Two in high school, he has made WKU as his target. Each year, he got the Enrollment Guide of WKU to know the details and shared it with other students.

Chen Shanjie was ranked 4th in the “Three in one” examination and got the letter of admission to WKU successfully. He is looking forward to his college life in the future. “I hope I can try different social activities to train myself except for study. ”

Since 2014 when WKU put the “Three in one” examination system into trial run and up to this year, 115 applicants have been admitted to WKU through this system.

Students with high score in the second batch were admitted, A girl from Zhejiang said that “she was lucky”

“I didn’t expect to be admitted to WKU, but actually I did, which was very lucky for me.” Yu Xinyu, an applicant from Hangzhou, came to WKU to register in the company of her parents.

This year, WKU planned to enroll 285 students in Zhejiang Province, of which 45 are students in arts. Since the college entrance examination is undergoing reform in Zhejiang Province, there exist a number of uncertainties. After the second batch enrollment finished, WKU planned to enroll the remaining students in the second batch, which was undoubtedly great news for students with high score in the second batch.

WKU was on the intention list of Yu Xinyu. But she played not that well in college entrance exam, with one point below the admission line of national key universities in the Province . After learning that WKU planned to enroll a certain number of applicants in the batch, Yu Xinyu filled all the specialties of WKU in the application form, so that the chance to be admitted would be greater. Finally, she became a “WKUer” as she wished.

“She has always wanted to study abroad, but I would be worried if she went abroad for undergraduate study. So it’s a best choice to study in a Sino-foreign cooperative university in which she can get familiar with foreign education mode in advance and prepare for studying abroad in the future.” Her mother said.

In the second batch application, WKU added additional 20 quotas for Wenzhou since many applicants applied for WKU.

New breakthrough in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and foreign enrollment, To know about China and the world

This year, WKU made a new breakthrough in enrolling students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and foreign countries. 2 foreign students, 4 Taiwan student and 1 Hong Kong students were enrolled in this year.

Since last year, WKU has begun to enroll full-time students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and foreign countries. WKU enrolled international students by direct application, Hong Kong, Macao and overseas Chinese students by united entrance exam, and Taiwan students by united entrance exam or “Taiwan exam”.

Soo Jinwen, a 18-year-old girl from Kuala Lumpur of Malaysia, is the first time to leave parents to study in a foreign land.

She is the third generation of overseas Chinese in Malaysia. “My dad wants me to study in China, so that I can know more about Chinese economy and culture. WKU is a Chinese university but teaches in English, so I can know not only about China, but also about the world.” Soo Jinwen said.

Soo Jinwen is still unfamiliar with this new environment, but satisfied with the beautiful campus and dormitory. “The scenery is beautiful and the dormitory condition is good, which is much better than that of Malaysian university.” She wishes that she can make more friends and her Chinese will be better in the future.

It’s noteworthy that design specialties have always been the traditionally preponderant specialties in WKU and are popular among students. This year, a Hong Kong student and a Taiwan student chose the Visual Communication Design major of WKU coincidentally.

Next, those freshmen will join a 2-week Summer English Training Program to prepare them for the English-only teaching environment.
