WKU Filmmakers Capture the Essence of "Slow Life" at International Film Festival

In a inspiring cross-cultural venture, three WKU students from the Communication Department, led by Professor Imran Khan, traveled to Lousã, Portugal, to participate in the ART&TUR International Tourism Film Festival.

Upon arriving in Lousã, the students quickly immersed themselves in the town’s vibrant atmosphere, which sparked the idea for their short film, "Put Down Your Phone, Break Free, and Embrace Life." The students explained, “Our goal was to create a film that emphasizes the importance of disconnecting from digital distractions and reconnecting with a more meaningful and authentic way of living.”

With a clear vision in mind, the team quickly assigned roles: Wang Yiran took on the dubbing, Zhang Shuyang handled editing, and Zheng Yaxin led the filming. As they prepared the film, the students took full advantage of Lousã's charming village, drawing inspiration from its unique surroundings. "We really immersed ourselves in the village’s serenity, capturing every detail to create a warm, tranquil atmosphere," one student shared.

Professor Imran Khan gave the team complete creative freedom, allowing them to express their ideas without constraint. Inspired by films like The Truman Show and The Grand Budapest Hotel, they added their own unique flair and perspective to the project.From the first draft to the final cut, the short film evolved into a cherished reflection of their time in Lousã. "It was exhausting, but seeing the final product made it all worth it," said Zheng Yaxin.Throughout the festival, the team had the opportunity to connect with filmmakers from around the world, exchanging ideas and sharing their work. The positive reception of their short film only boosted their confidence. "We learned so much by doing, and this experience was truly unforgettable," they concluded.

Their journey not only strengthened their filmmaking skills but also showcased the power of collaboration, creativity, and the importance of embracing the moment—both on and off the screen.
