Kean University's Travel-Learn Program Bridges China-U.S. Cultural Exchange


A delegation of 54 faculty members and students from Kean University in the United States recently arrived in Wenzhou, China, for a nine-day cultural exchange tour. Focusing on academic exchange, corporate visit, and cultural experience, the program aims to offer young Americans an immersive opportunity to explore China's modern development and appreciate Wenzhou's ancient Ouyue culture.

Youth Dialogue: Co-shaping the Future

Upon their arrival on March 9, the students participated in a youth dialogue event hosted by Wenzhou-Kean University, themed "Youth Dialogue, Connecting the Future." Over a hundred Chinese and American students gathered to share their insights and aspirations for cross-cultural understanding, fostering mutual respect and friendship.

Cai Jiaxuan, a student representative from Wenzhou-Kean University, emphasized the importance of intercultural interactions, "Exchanges between Chinese and American youths are crucial. Genuine communication will break down prejudices, build friendships, promote mutual understanding, and foster collaboration." She also encouraged young people to engage in such exchanges to create a diverse and harmonious future for all.

Patrice Guillaume, a student from Kean University, shared his previous experiences exchanging in Wenzhou, "I have to say my personal experiences go far beyond media descriptions. Face-to-face interactions which connect people are far more important than figuring out differences."

Billy Schussler is a history education major who visited China for the first time said, "I’m eager to learn about China’s history and the cultural differences between our countries. That’s what I’m most interested in.” He believes that such exchanges are essential for promoting mutual understanding, respect, and peaceful cooperation between the two nations.

Feeling Business Intelligence through Hands-on Activities

A Global Master of Business Administration (GMBA) team visited renowned private enterprises in Wenzhou, including Ruipu Lanjun Energy, Baoxiniao Holding, and Delixi Group. At Baoxiniao Yunyi Intelligent Production Center, they expressed admiration for its smart manufacturing, personalized customization, and cloud data operation models. At the Delixi Group's intelligent factory, GMBA students and faculty were impressed with China’s progress in the manufacturing sector. They observed the operation of industrial robots, automated assembly lines, and digital management platforms.

Dr. David Farrokh, Assistant Dean of the College of Business and Public Management at KUSA, noted that Delixi’s innovative practices provide a vivid example for students to observe real-world application of global business management practices. The delegation was also able to observe interdisciplinary exchanges unfold in China’s business environment.

Exploring the Chinese Traditional Medicine: A Bridge for Health Cooperation

Some students were anxious to explore traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) culture. They visited the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Wenzhou Medical University, the affiliated Wenzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Leqing Dendrobium Cultural Park.

A medical student from KUSA, America Adyeren Luna said, "I’m particularly interested in Chinese culture, especially its traditional medicine practices like Tai Chi, acupuncture, and herbal remedies. Both the U.S. and China have rich medical resources, and such exchanges are incredibly valuable for global medical development, especially in tackling challenges like COVID-19. Collaboration makes problem-solving easier." She believes that cooperation between the two countries can drive medical progress and create a healthier world.

Exploring the Nature and Culture: Bridging the World Through Wenzhou’s Heritage

During the tour, the young Americans hiked in Yandang Mountain, strolled through Yongjia Academy, and climbed Shibayan Rock, immersing themselves in the cultural heritage of the ancient city.

At the Wenzhou No. 8 Senior High School, the American students participated in a running exercise, practiced traditional martial arts, and explored an advanced artificial intelligence laboratory. They were amazed by the diversity and dynamism of Chinese campus culture.

This cross-continental cultural exchange not only allowed American youths to witness Wenzhou city’s vibrant culture at the forefront of China’s reform and opening-up, but the program also enabled more Americans to appreciate the beauty of China and build a bridge for China-U.S. friendship.
