Last week, on Monday, May 9, the Common Reads Program hosted their end-of-semester American Born Chinese scavenger hunt event. The committee: Jennifer Marquardt, Kyra Whitehead, Michael Watkins, Jim Tarwood, Alfredo Oquendo, Kristen Hartmen, Rui Kang, Jiajia Li, CLA Dean Denise Horn, and English Director David Hogsette hosted American Born Chinese related activities at various stations within the hunt. Event hosts were stationed throughout the central building on campus.

Participants met in B101 where Program Chair, Kyra Whitehead described the Common Reads Program and announced the start of the event. More than 75 students participated in this activity, eager to take on the challenge. Agnes Tang and her MA TESOL students helped arrange students into groups and assisted at event stations, as needed. Groups were tasked with gathering clues to each station and collecting puzzle pieces upon task completion.
After the countdown to the start of the hunt, participants raced around campus to complete activities at each station. Those stationed at their event posts on the arranged path challenged participants to complete the designated tasks in a timely manner.

Throughout the activity, students were enthusiastic as they solved puzzles, dubbed character voices, acted out scenes from the book, learned martial arts, pieced together transformers, drew pictures, discussed cultural stereotypes, and took selfies. The first place group even got creative and raced bikes to the events!

After the many tests and at the conclusion of the event, the top three groups to complete the competition and the puzzle with their gathered puzzle pieces, were awarded prizes including cameras, stereos, book marks, and bug repellent for the dorms.
