Youth science education working committee visit Wenzhou-Kean University
On the morning of November 15, 2018, the youth science education working committee of Wenzhou Association for Science and Technology went to Wenzhou-Kean University to carry out special research activities. Representatives include Ms JIN An, Deputy Director of Wenzhou Education Bureau, researcher, Vice Chairman of Wenzhou Association for Science and Technology; Mr. LU Qianfan, Vice Chairman of Wenzhou Association for Science and Technology.
Accompanied by Mr. YING Yonghong, Member of the Party Committee of Wenzhou-Kean University, the delegation visited the campus which combines Chinese and Western culture, as well as biological and chemical laboratories, student dormitories and College of Public and Business Management. In the following symposium, Committee Member Mr. YING Yonghong, Director of Office of Research and Sponsored Programs Ms JIN Chun, and Vice Dean of College of Science and Technology Dr. Larry Brown, introduced the background of Wenzhou-Kean University and the STEM education development to the delegation.
Wenzhou-Kean University is a Sino-US cooperative university with independent legal status. In March 2014, the Ministry of Education officially approved the establishment of Wenzhou-Kean University. As the cooperation project between Zhejiang province and New Jersey, the Ministry of Education listed the construction of Wenzhou-Kean University as one of the major Sino-foreign cooperation projects to expand education cooperation and promote educational reform through opening. At present, 4 colleges in Wenzhou-Kean University are, College of Public and Business Management, College of Architecture and Design, College of Liberal Arts, and College of Science and Technology, with about 2,200 students and more than 100 full-time faculty recruited worldwide. The university has made use of the advantages of international education to integrate the Chinese and western advantages into education. The characteristics of Wenzhou-Kean University have been preliminarily highlighted, and good results have been achieved. It has cultivated a group of Wenzhou-Kean graduates with strong innovation, creativity and pioneering ability, patriotic feelings and international vision. At the same time, the university also actively promotes the cooperation between Kean University and the education department of Zhejiang Province on STEM education.
At the symposium, members of the working committee also had an in-depth exchange on how to use local university resources to serve the city’s youth science and technology education. It was agreed that the education, science and technology departments of Wenzhou should make full use of all kinds of resources to build a service platform for teenager’s technology education. In particular, the international high-quality education resources such as Wenzhou-Kean University, is able to promote the development of STEM education in primary and secondary schools in Wenzhou through student summer camps, teacher training and sister schools’ cooperation and exchange.
