Wenzhou-Kean University Makes Debut in 2027 Times Higher Education World University Rankings

Times Higher Education (THE) has officially released its 2027 World University Rankings, with Wenzhou-Kean University (WKU) making its debut at 913th globally and 71st among universities in the Chinese mainland. The recognition reflects the university’s growing institutional strength and international profile.
The 2027 THE World University Rankings includes 2,297 universities across 118 countries and regions, with 102 universities from the Chinese mainland included in the ranking. As one of the world’s widely recognised university performance rankings, THE evaluates institutions across five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry. Its comprehensive assessment framework provides a multidimensional evaluation of university performance.

WKU performed strongly across a number of indicators, with international outlook emerging as one of its particular strengths. Accounting for 7.5% of the overall ranking, the international outlook indicator assesses universities’ international engagement, including international student enrolment, international faculty and cross-border research collaboration. WKU scored 74.2 points in this area, ranking approximately 388th globally and second among ranked universities in the Chinese mainland, highlighting the university’s strong international profile.
In research quality, which accounts for 30% of the overall ranking, WKU scored 71.4 points, placing it approximately 579th globally and 53rd among universities in the Chinese mainland. This indicator reflects the influence of research outputs, research strength and the reach of academic work, and highlights the university’s continued progress in academic development and research innovation.
WKU’s debut in the THE World University Rankings represents recognition of its long-term commitment to strengthening the quality and foundations of its educational mission. The university currently has 319 full-time faculty members and research staff from 43 countries and regions, contributing to a diverse and international academic community. It has more than 5,000 undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students, with students from more than 30 countries and regions. Over the past three years, the university has achieved a “70%+70%” outcome among its undergraduate students, with around 70% pursuing further study and around 70% gaining admission to universities ranked among the global top 100. Among the Class of 2025, 83% of graduates were admitted to global top-100 universities, including 19% admitted to top-10 universities. Many other graduates have also distinguished themselves in the workplace, drawing on the international education and experience they gained at WKU.
In recent years, WKU has promoted the integrated development of teaching, research and talent development, driving the evolution of its educational model from a primarily teaching-focused approach toward closer coordination between teaching and research. The university has continued to develop high-level research platforms and produce high-quality academic outputs. It has established partnerships with more than 20 overseas universities, including Yale University and the University of Cambridge. Internationally co-authored papers account for 67.6% of its more than 2,200 papers published in international journals. Through platforms including the Zhejiang-Malaysia Joint Laboratory for Rare Medicinal Resources and the Zhejiang Provincial International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Bioinformatics, WKU has undertaken more than 40 international research projects. The university has also strengthened support for student research and expanded opportunities for faculty-student research collaboration. Nearly 600 student participations in domestic and international academic conferences have been supported, while students have published more than 300 papers as first or corresponding authors in international journals indexed by SCI, SSCI and other major databases. These efforts have contributed to steady improvements in the quality of academic output and have helped unlock students’ research potential. At the same time, WKU has continued to deepen its internationalisation efforts by optimising its international student profile and expanding global educational exchange. The results of these long-term efforts are reflected in the university’s performance in the latest THE ranking.

Building on this new milestone, WKU will leverage its debut in the THE World University Rankings to further draw on the distinctive strengths of its China-U.S. cooperative education model, while pursuing high-quality, substantive development and strengthening its academic disciplines. The university will continue to refine its disciplinary and programme structure, increase investment in science, engineering and foundational disciplines, and strengthen the foundations of its academic offerings. By 2027, WKU plans to introduce new programmes in areas including biomedicine, data science, kinesiology and sports rehabilitation, responding to emerging industries and evolving societal needs. Through these efforts, the university aims to further strengthen its academic capabilities, international profile and contribution to the development of talent and knowledge.
