Biology Lecture: Lipid Droplet Dynamics in the Face of Climate Change: Innovative Strategies for Enhancing Crop Resilience
Overview
To strengthen scientific research exchanges between our university and other Sino-foreign joint universities, showcase our university’s scientific research level, and broaden students’ horizons, the Department of Natural Sciences of the College of Science, Mathematics and Technology of Wenzhou-Kean University invited Prof. Eunyu Kim from Duke Kunshan University. A seminar was held on the theme of “The Important Role of Lipid Droplets in Plant Defense Mechanisms under Environmental Stress” on September 20. Many professors and students interested in plant research actively participated and had cordial and friendly talks with Prof. Eunyu Kim after the seminar.
Prof. Jungbin Kim of our university warmly welcomes Prof. Eunyu Kim
Activity Content
At the beginning of the event, Jungbin Kim, Assistant Professor of the Department of Environmental Science of our university, expressed his gratitude and warm welcome to Prof. Eunyu Kim for taking time out of her busy schedule to come to our university for academic exchanges, and gave a brief introduction to Prof. Eunyu Kim.
Prof. Eunyu Kim first briefly introduced Duke Kunshan University. She said that Duke Kunshan University has a curriculum system and educational philosophy similar to those of Wenzhou-Kean University, which quickly narrowed the distance between Prof. Eunyu Kim and the students, making it easier for the students to integrate into the seminar.
The United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals rearranged into a “wedding cake”
Then, Prof. Eunyu Kim started with the big theme of climate and human life. By rearranging the 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations into the form of a “wedding cake,” she vividly summarized the role of the majors related to these development goals and the contributions of the topics she was about to introduce to these goals. She introduced the research goals to the students on-site in a very novel and easy-to-understand way.
To make the students more integrated into the entire seminar, Prof. Eunyu Kim explained her research direction further with the familiar question, “What is a cellular compartment?” She said that her research is more inclined to the study of stress-driven compartment. Through the general structure of raising questions, making hypotheses, experimental verification, solving problems, and practical applications, Prof. Eunyu Kim shared the role of lipid droplets and their surrounding proteins in plant resistance to stress and showed relevant experimental data and said that her future experimental direction will focus on the role of lipid droplets and their related proteins in the process of plant resistance to viruses.
Prof. Eunyu Kim shares her research results
In the final QA session, Assistant Professor Zhang Bo from the Department of Biology asked Prof. Eunyu Kim three profound questions, and they briefly discussed them. In addition, freshmen asked Prof. Eunyu Kim whether they could conduct scientific research in their freshman year. Prof. Eunyu Kim said that she very much welcomes freshmen who want to research to join the scientific research team, but the prerequisite is that they must have a solid theoretical foundation. She believes that with the accumulation of time, every student can gain something in the scientific research field that suits them.
Prof. Bo Zhang asked Prof. Eunyu Kim questions
At the end of the seminar, Prof. Jungbin Kim once again expressed his gratitude and welcome to Prof. Eunyu Kim. Prof. Jungbin Kim told the freshmen that the College of Science, Mathematics and Technology of Wenzhou-Kean University has an inclusive and friendly scientific research environment, and the professors are very welcoming to undergraduates participating in scientific research. He also encouraged the freshmen to accumulate professional knowledge and lay a solid foundation for their future careers in their favorite fields.
