Professor Agnes Tang Led Phonics Workshop for Teachers of Wenzhou City!

A two-day Phonics Workshop was held at Wenzhou-Kean University in the TESOL Experimental Classroom. Participants included 25 primary school English teachers and teacher trainers from all over Wenzhou.

Phonological Awareness and Phonics: Foundational skills for reading and writing

Professor Tang delivered key information, through practical activities, to foster participants’ understanding of phonological awareness (ability to identify sounds in the English language) and phonics (letter/sound relationships) and how these skills prepare students for later reading (decoding) and writing (encoding).

Practical Activities that Inspire:

Participants actively engaged in a variety of activities designed to enhance students’ phonological awareness (PA), and Phonics skills, inspiring teachers to try new teaching activities that could make a difference in the primary English classrooms.

Professional Exchanges:

Teachers and teacher trainers from Wenzhou enthusiastically participated in professional discussions, sharing insights and gains from the application of the American teaching methods, collectively driving the improvement of local educational practices.

Affecting Paradigm Shift: Efficient Teaching vs. Effective Teaching

Efficient Teaching: Teaching the prescribed amount of materials in a given amount of time to the majority of the students in class. The goal is to finish teaching the materials.

Effective Teaching:

Align lesson activities with lesson objectives using materials and approaches that are appropriate for the students’ developmental and proficiency level. The goal is that students learn.

Participant Testimonials:

"I learned a lot about Phonics and innovative American teaching methods, and the benefits were profound!"

"Professor Agnes Tang's sharing was very inspiring, giving me a clearer perspective on how to teach phonics effectively."

"I firmly believe that what I've learned will greatly benefit my students, and I look forward to applying this knowledge in the classroom."

“This workshop is very different from other workshops I’ve attended in the past. In previous workshops, we all sat quietly listening to lectures, but in Prof. Tang’s workshop, we were engaged. We made activities that we could use the next day in class.”

In Conclusion:

Special thanks to Professor Agnes Tang for her dedicated contribution and to all participating educators for their enthusiasm and professionalism, which added immense value to this event. We look forward to continuing our collective efforts to contribute to the field of education!
